Papers : of John Quincy Adams Buford, 1844-1865.

The collection contains correspondence and financial papers of Buford who, as a partner in the firms of Buford and Mitchell and Buford and Strickland, supervised the building of the Southwest Virginia turnpike between Botetourt and the Tennessee border in 1848-1849, and of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad from Lynchburg west, 1851-1861. Most of the correspondence deals with hiring hands, and contracting for supplies. With these are check rolls for black and Irish workers, two contracts with the Irish Emigrant Society, turnpike specifications, and notebooks of expenses and cost account for each railroad section. Buford served as captain of Co. C of the 42nd Virginia Regiment. His war papers include medical discharges for company members, and letters about the provisioning of the company and the Valley campaign of 1861. Of interest is a letter from a cook at the University of Virginia soldiers' hospital.
